The Minecraft videogame

The Tardis will land in the popular videogame this September: the Xbox 360 Edition will soon get to step into Peter Capaldi’s shoes and go on adventures as the legendary Time Lord.

September will see the first downloadable Doctor Who add-on for the Minecraft videogame, letting fans make themselves look like the new Doctor or Clara. Also included are five other (but not specifed yet) Doctors and their companions, plus monsters and bad guys like the Daleks, Ice Warriors and Zygons.

The first downloadable pack will cost £1.99 and BBC Worldwide promise more will follow, with at least six doctors in each of them.

Like, say, this incredibly detailed recreation of Matt Smith’s Tardis… the V-0.5 Version Console from the Eleventh Hour.

The symphonic spectacular show

The video is taken by someone in the audience a few months ago, this year, but… the Murray Gold’s captivating musical score for Doctor Who performed live, accompanied by specially edited big-screen sequences featuring all incarnations of the Doctor, as a host of real-life monsters stalk the auditorium will return with a tour in Australia and New Zeeland (tour dates announced) but also in UK (tour dates announced).

The show will be hosted once more by Fifth Doctor, Peter Davison, who will take to the stage alongside Daleks, Cybermen and a host of other Doctor Who monsters in this musical celebration of the iconic TV series.

River Song, the journey

This should be one of the rides of a lifetime. At least, the ride of River Song’s lifetime: in this video you can
watch every single scene from Doctor Who that River Song appears in… in the order she lived them. You might need some tissues: from birth to death, River Song has had one of the most wild timey-wimey adventures anyone could ever have with the Doctor.

The video was compiled by Todd and Conner Partridge.

Writers and directors for series 8

Steven Thompson, the guy who wrote The Curse of the Black Spot back in 2011 and Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS last year, was confirmed to return to Doctor Who and he will wrote some more great episode of the series 8. It’s the first time he’s written for new Doctor, Peter Capaldi.

Douglas MacKinnon is also returning to Doctor Who, in order to direct a batch of the new episodes. Showrunner Steven Moffat confirmed that will write the series opener as well as episode four. Phil Ford (The Sarah Jane Adventures, Wizards vs Aliens) has been tapped to write the second episode, while the writer of the third will be confirmed in the future

Meantime, the writer Mark Gatiss has promised that Peter Capaldi’s Doctor will change everything and that he brings a whole new set of rules. As it should be. Speaking to Digital Spy, he said: “The Doctor’s always the Doctor – but you can have a lot of fun playing with people’s expectations. Everyone knows how the previous Doctor would react in any given situation – and now you just don’t know!” Steven Moffat has written Capaldi’s first full Doctor Who episode, which Mark Gatiss described as “thrilling”.

Samuel Anderson, unveiled as the new Doctor Who companion, a teacher

The news of the day is the announcement of a new companion for the Doctor: Samuel Jackson joins the cast of Doctor who as Danny Pink, a teacher working alongside Clara Oswald at Coal Hill School, where original Who companions Barbara Wright and Ian Chesterton taught back in 1963 before heading off in the Tardis for adventures in space and time.

Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat said he was looking forward to introducing the  character to viewers, but remained coy about exactly what part Danny would play in the Doctor and Clara’s adventures.

Karen Gillan will star in US comedy pilot Selfie

Karen Gillan has been spending a lot of time in United States since leaving her role as Doctor Who’s Amy Pond: she faced a haunted mirror in US horror film Oculus, she also shaved her long ginger locks for the role of blue sexy Nebula in the upcoming Marvel Studios movie Guardians of the Galaxy and now she’s set to take the starring role in a new ABC comedy pilot entitled Selfie.

The series was described as a modern take on My Fair Lady, and it follows the misfortunes of Eliza Dooley, a young woman in her 20s who seems to be more obsessed with her online persona than her professional image. In the pilot, a video Eliza makes about her humiliating break-up goes viral, and she recruits the help of a marketing expert to help repair her besmirched reputation.

Why and how the Doctor Who episodes were lost

The finding of some the missing episodes of Doctor Who was the main subject for the last week: in 1980, over half of Doctor Who’s first 253 episodes were missing from the BBC’s archives and now there are only 97 of the not recovered. Yet.

The main reason for that horror is that the original 1960s material was erased and the tapes were re-recorded. There were several reason for the wiping of Doctor Who (and many other 1960s TV series), and they are explained in this article from DoctorWho.tv (with more details).

On Doctor Who, an episode would be recorded directly to videotape from studio, with as much of the work we would now term “post production” occurring at the same time. This meant music, location filming, the titles and credits, and model or effects shots were pre-recorded and played-in to the studio recording. Bar some small edits, this was essentially a finished programme. The videotape version was transmitted on the BBC, often after a very short period of time – as little as two or three weeks post-recording.

Most tapes were then sent to BBC Enterprises (the corporation’s commercial arm, now BBC Worldwide) for “telerecording” onto film – a much more durable and commonly-used medium – to be sold to international broadcasters.

Once both a UK transmission had occurred and an overseas sales film copy had been created, if neither Enterprises nor the BBC had any further interest in the episodes, the original videotapes were cleared for wiping.

Further more, an infographic was posted with some dates about Doctor Who episodes being returned from various areas of Earth.

The video is a segment from The One Show (October 11th, 2013) looking at the recovery of missing Doctor Who episodes. Presented by Peter Purves.

The story of the week is the recovery of nine episodes starring Patrick Troughton as the second Doctor, as BBC Worldwide finally confirmed, bringing the total missing from the archive down from 106 to 97! The film prints were discovered in Nigeria by Phillip Morris, director of the Television International Enterprises Archive.

These are two (almost) complete Patrick Troughton six-parters: The Enemy of the World (in which the Doctor has an evil double, Salamander – all six episodes were recovered) and The Web of Fear (the Yeti invade London via the Underground – 5 episodes recovered, episode 3 still missing, but a version has been constructed using photos and the surviving soundtrack and is included in the iTunes package). The serials were transmitted consecutively over 12 weeks in the winter of 1967/68.

From today fans can download the two adventures via iTunes, priced £9.99 each. This includes people in the USA, Canada, Australia, Germany and France and in the UK (excluding the Republic of Ireland).

Download The Web of Fear

The first episode of The Web of Fear (read the story guide of the series) and the third episode of The Enemy of the World (read the story guide of the series) have long existed in the BBC archive.

Additionally, The Enemy of the World will be released on DVD on Monday 25 November – the disc is available for pre-order now from BBC Shop. The Web of Fear will follow in early 2014.
