The best news of the week are that Doctor Who wins NTA best drama award and Matt Smith wins NTAs best Drama Performance for the role of Eleventh Doctor. The BBC1 science fiction series fought against a the competition from ITV’s Broadchurch, Downton Abbey and Call the Midwife. Matt Smith beat off Doc Martin’s Martin Clunes, Call the Midwife’s Miranda Hart and Downton Abbey’s Maggie Smith at the viewer-voted awards.
The event happened tonight as the sci-fi show got the best drama gong at this year’s National Television Awards. The award was the culmination of a great year for the show, which included 50th years anniversary special The Day of the Doctor, Matt Smith’s Christmas Day farewell and regeneration into Peter Capaldi.
Mat Smith is currently starring in darkly comic West End musical American Psycho and he was absent. His Drama Series award handed over by England football manager Roy Hodgson and it was collected by Matt’s co-star Jenna Coleman, Doctor’s companion, and showrunner Steven Moffat. They added that the actor would be posting a video message to thank viewers for voting.
The star-studded ceremony was hosted by Dermot O’Leary and broadcast live on ITV from London’s O2 Arena.
