Doctor Who, season 12, episode 2 – Spyfall, part two

Surprinsingly, the second part of Spyfall is better than the first. There were, still, some issues (like the shoes with embedded lasers) but the episode was not bad at all. More: it comes close to Doctor’s style. Twice I could enjoy some of the effects of time travels and that’s good.

Season 12 of the new Doctor Who started badly but, at least for now, it’s fine: at the end of the first part the Doctor was captive in anothr dimension and her companions were inside a falling plane. The Doctor is getting free with the help of a woman happening to be there and she is taken to the year 1834 AD. Her friends find unexpected help (a very usefull one) and they are also saved.

With the psycho Master on her tracks the Doctor arrives to 1943, in the middle of the second world war, and gets a new friend (the first female spy sent under cover, with a radio, behind the enemy lines) and she finds out moree about Master’s plan to distroy the humanity. Meantime, the ones left behind in the XXIst century with the Doctor’s TARDIS are following Daniel Barton and the same plan, with more ore less success. Well, that plan fails, the Master is getting what he deserves but the Doctor finds out something unexpected: Gallifrey was, in part, destroyed. Some cities were lost because the Master found out about the Time Lords’ lies – they were not what they were told.

The Doctor will have to find out by herself the truth, sometimes in the following 8 episode of season 12, but I would not be surprised that the Time Lords were direct decendants of humanity – a number of people got through the time anomaly in the center of Gallifreyan civilisation and they could not return. In time, these people became Lords.

Directed by Lee Haven Jones, written by Chris Chibnall.

Cast: Jodie Whittaker (The Doctor), Bradley Walsh (Graham O’Brien), Tosin Cole (Ryan Sinclair), Mandip Gill (Yasmin Khan), Lenny Henry (Daniel Barton), Sylvie Briggs (Ada Lovelace), Mark Dexter (Charles Babbage), Sacha Dhawan (The Master), Ravin J. Ganatra (Hakim Khan), Shobna Gulati (Najia Khan), Kenneth Jay (Perkins), Aurora Marion (Noor Inayat Khan), Bhavnisha Parmar (Sonya Khan).

Next episode, Orphan 55, will be aired 12 January 2020: having decided that everyone could do with a holiday, the Doctor takes Graham, Yasmin and Ryan to a luxury resort for a spot of rest and relaxation. However, they discover the place where they are having a break is hiding a number of deadly secrets. What are the ferocious monsters that are attacking Tranquillity Spa?
