Doctor Who, series 12, episode 1 – Spyfall, part one

Old Doctor Who (the seasons aired before the break that ended in 2005) has some missing episoded because the magnetic record had been rewritten with other shows aired by BBC since the initial release. If the season 12 of new Doctor Who continues in the same style as its first episode I will not be surprised that some people will make it lost on purpose because of bad writing and bad production.

The idea is quite interesting: when intelligence agents around the world come under attack from alien forces MI6 turns to the only people who can help. The Doctor and her friends. As they travel the globe for answers, attacks come from all sides. It is said that Earth’s security rests on the team’s shoulders, but the conspiracy leads them to a (sort of) surprise ending of part one.

But the story has some issues, things that make you ask yourself (no one will offer you an answer) “why he / she did that?!”. Daniel Barton threatens the Doctor with the security people he has around him but when he should use them he acts by himself (and stupid). The Master (because the biggest Doctor’s enemy is back) spend some good years taking someone’s identity but he makes a foolish mistake near the end of the episode. There are some other mistakes during the episode but I let you find the watching it – it’s far for being one of the greatest episodes of the show (there were a few until now).

Directed by Jamie Magnus Stone, written by Chris Chibnall.

Cast: Jodie Whittaker (The Doctor), Bradley Walsh (Graham O’Brien), Mandip Gill (Yasmin Khan), Tosin Cole (Ryan Sinclair), Lenny Henry (Daniel Barton), Stephen Fry (C), Shobna Gulati (Najia Khan), Ravin J. Ganatra (Hakim Khan), Bhavnisha Parmar (Sonya Khan), Melissa De Vries (Sniper), Sacharissa Claxton (Passenger), William Ely (Older Passenger), Brian Law (US Operative), Buom Tihngang (Tibo), Asif Khan (Sgt Ramesh Sunder).

The next episode, the second part of Spyfall, will be aired 5 January 2020.
